Signs of a Dead Nation
King of an Arab state once wanted to test the discernment (شعور) of
their people. He thought it would be better to impose an unjustified tax
on the people who used to cross the river by passing over a bridge. If
there is any discernment left in the nation then they will surely fight
against this act of injustice. He deputed a sipahi on the entrance of
the bridge to collect the tax from everyone passing the bridge. The king
thought the soon the people will come to him and will complain against
the unjustified tax. When no one showed up after a week, the King
decided to double the tax amount hoping that the people will now
definitely fight against this imperialism. Still no one complained about
this. The King was frustrated. The King learnt that since everyone in
his rule is very happy & wealthy and that could be the reason that
the money is not a problem for them. The next evening, the King ordered
that not only the double tax will be charged but everyone who will pass
the bridge will be hit twice by shoe in the back (the extreme
insult-full act in Arab culture). The King was very satisfied after
imposing this rule. He went to sleep and hoped that the people will come
tomorrow and complain about this injustice. The King was amazed when he
woke up the next morning to see a huge crowed in front of his palace.
He asked their leader to explain the situation. The leader of that
crowed complaint that “the only sipahi on the bridge is not enough
to hit the whole lot of people. We get late to our work due to long
queues to get hit by the shoes. Kindly increase the number of sipahis on
the gate so that multiple people can be hit simultaneously so that we
can get to our work on time.”
